Collection: Primers
What is a primer?
A primer is a pre-treatment that prepares wood surfaces for a subsequent coating. Depending on the product, it can influence the absorbency of the wood, support the adhesion of the subsequent coating, and contribute to a uniform surface appearance.
Why is a primer important?
Primers fulfill different functions depending on the product system. For wooden and parquet floors, for example, they serve as a base for subsequent lacquers and sealers and can influence the absorption behavior as well as the visual effect of the wood. Special impregnating primers for outdoor use can also provide additional protective functions.
What types of primers are available?
-
Water-based primers: For the preparation of untreated wood and parquet surfaces before a subsequent coating. Depending on the product, they can dry quickly and influence the natural color effect of the wood.
-
Parquet primers: Specially coordinated for subsequent processing with suitable parquet lacquers and sealers.
-
Impregnating primers: For absorbent wood outdoors. Depending on the product, they can protect against blue stain and moisture, for example, and serve as a base for subsequent glazes, oils, or paints.
How is a primer applied correctly?
-
Preparation: The wood surface should be clean, dry, and free of dust. Old coatings or residues must be removed according to the manufacturer's instructions, depending on the system.
-
Applying the primer: Depending on the product, application is carried out using a brush, roller, or another intended tool. The primer should be applied evenly.
-
Observe drying time: The drying time depends on the respective product and the processing conditions.
-
Intermediate sanding: Depending on the primer and coating system, a light intermediate sanding may be intended.
-
Applying the final coating: After sufficient drying, the further coating is applied using a product compatible with the primer system.
The next steps after priming
After applying the primer, the intended final treatment can be carried out. Which coating can be used depends on the respective primer and the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Wood lacquer: For a closed surface coating of wood.
-
Sealer: For the surface treatment and protection of wood and parquet floors.
-
Wood glaze: Depending on the primer system, for the further treatment of wood surfaces, particularly in outdoor areas.
-
Wood oil: For primer systems intended for this purpose, a treatment with a suitable oil can follow.
Choose the primer suitable for the substrate, area of application, and intended coating system. In our range, you will find various primers for wood and parquet surfaces indoors and outdoors.
